     Gelon Jesse Hodges married Ruth Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Phebe Smith.1 Gelon Jesse Hodges was born in 1822 at Hancock County, Indiana.1 He was the son of Benjamin Hodges and Jane Jenny McComb.1 Gelon Jesse Hodges was a farmer.1 He began military service on 4 August 1862 at Muscatine, Muscatine County, Iowa, He had enrolled earlier the same day at La Motte, Iowa,to serve in Company I, 24th Regiment, Iowa Volunteers for three years or for the duration of the war. He mustered into service as a private.1 His military service ended on 8 February 1863 at Regiment Hospital, Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas.1 He died on 8 February 1863 of typhoid fever at Regiment Hospital, Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas.1 He was buried at Mississippi River National Cemetery, Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas.1 He was reinterred at Memphis National Cemetery, Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, after the military cemetery at Helena, Arkansas was abandoned due to being subject to flooding by the Mississippi River.1
